Small Annoying Things to fix in Maya forum

Welcome all Maya users! We have merged the Maya and Maya LT forums to make it easier to track and vote on items that apply to both packages. Please help us identify things that bother you when you’re working in Maya that we can easily fix.

What is a little tweak or change we can make to Maya?

  2. ncloth enforce the escape/cancel properly.

    when Ncloth is stuck in a massive funk while trying to calculate collisions (for example) the escape key takes forever to cancel the simulations. Please allow for a proper escape option.

  3. Prioritize channel box when creating new geometry

    When creating a new piece of geometry, e.g. "Poly Plane" the channel box will display the standard 10 animateable channels at the top, and then below it, instead of construction history which has attrs such as "subdivision height" (used to be like that before), now we have Arnold attrs. This makes no sense, as it introduces hunting for attributes which are needed but hidden from the view, over attributes which one will not need any time soon. No one renders a newly created primitive object; they adjust it first.

  4. Fix the temperorary component selection bug!

    The temporary component selection mode which one invokes with the RMB after selecting an object (e.g. vertex, edge, face...), stays ON permanently. You cannot get out of it as before: It used to be that I could also use RMB to do "Select All" and then just click on empty space and I am back in the "object selection mode".
    Now, you can invoke the temporary component selection mode with RMB as before, but once in, you cannot select "Select All" with RMB. It is not there any more. You are forced to go to the top of the interface…

  6. Merge vertices - specify resulting normals

    When merging vertices it would be great if I could choose for the resulting vertex normals to be split or average.

  7. Allow custom names for tabs in the script editor - all tabs are currently "MEL" or "Python"

    All tabs in the Script Editor are labeled either "MEL" or "Python".
    When I have 20 "MEL" tabs it becomes difficult to find the tab that I'm looking for.
    Please allow custom names.

  8. Sequence in shortcuts

    In each new version of Maya appear new tools with their respective menus and submenus, so many that you can no longer assign simple shortcuts
    My solution ... make shortcuts possible in sequence, something like has implemented sublimetext
    for example
    Ctrl + K, K delete from cursor to end of line

    Or zbrush to select brushes

    B, I, N inflate brush
    B, P, L planar brush

  9. Incorrect Icons.

    NOTE: Re-Submitted due to changes and Maya 2018 update.

    - In the Shift+RMB (on empty space) menu, the following primitive icons are incorrect:
    > The Pyramid icon: It may look correct, but it actually has the Cone's icon instead of it own. The proper one can be seen in Create > Polygon Primitives > Pyramid.
    > The Prism icon: It has the Cylinder's icon instead.
    > The Pipe icon: It, too, has the Cylinder's icon.

  10. Vertical/Horizontal arrangement of nodes - Node editor

    Vertical arrangement of nodes allows for the Node editor to be placed side by side to the Attribute Editor. When the node editor is docked above the attribute Editor, the AE is hard to read as its not really designed to be used in this type of layout. So an option to arrange nodes vertical/horizontal would be a nice touch.

  11. Please, Modernize the old MESH CLEANUP

    At this time, it will be convenient to have a more "visual" and more "user friendly" tool for dectecting and repairing topology and other non- manfiold troubles on our meshes. I think something like the "mesh checking" allowed by Maxon Cinema 4D will be great.

  13. Prevent node overlapping Node Editor

    Have an option to Allow/Not Allow node overlapping. Not so much for user control but to stop maya automatically overlapping nodes on creation. However nice option have have when dragging node around.

  14. Address placement of new nodes - Node Editor

    Sick and tired of searching for new nodes outside of the viewing area when inside Node Editor which are placed at the end of the network. Place newly created nodes bottom right hand corner of viewing space for example so they are easily accessed and name can be read. I find myself working at all parts of the node stream not just the end. This also includes nodes when auto-pin is on. Maya places them in the centre and overlapping - bad bad.

  16. More Intuitive UV Radial & Marking Menu

    Some tools that are frequently used are missing from the marking menu that existed in earlier versions of Maya. Tools such as Unitize and Smooth for instance.

    Some of the placement of the tools could be adjusted to more comfortable gestures. Frequently used tools should probably be set to horizontal and vertical movement rather than diagonal.

    The Align and Straighten are so similar they're practically redundant to have in the radial marking menu.

    Tools like the rotation already have dedicated keys and seem wasteful to take up a radial position in the marking menu.

  17. Locally-Centric, scene specific, Auto Keyframe

    Having Autokey as a global switch is super annoying. Auto keyframe would become a much better tool if it were applied to groups, objects, components, joins, etc. rather than a global switch. If I want to Autokey certain things in a scene, I should be able to select those things, then switch autokey on and have it turn off when deselecting those things. Making it locally-centric would remove the whole reason most people avoid using it all together - it stays on. It should turn off when you open a new scene at the very least. Please.

  18. Auto save dialogue hijacks EVERYTHING on Linux (not sure about windows)

    On linux I can be on a totally different desktop doing something unrelated to Maya and suddenly my desktop switches to maya with a dislogue asking me if I want to save my scene.

    I use the autosave to secure my work, but I use the reminder option as I have had crashing on autosave on some of my shots. Basically the dialogue reminds me to do a maual save or increment regularly.

    The problem is that the auto save dialogue should be visible when maya is actively used, not any time. It should not pull me out of other…

  19. MAYA PSD's great but full of big big bugs. (recommend better testing)

    I've been using PSD's and the new transform based, and tangent space blendshapes on a few feature films recently. The rigs are complex, and perhaps this is the reason why I'm coming across these bugs, but they shouldnt exist regardless of rig complexity.

    I can not log bugs behind our firewall. Could someone at AD please review this list and add to the bugbase?

    Some of these issues are reproducible but I cant send files so the descriptions are all I can offer at the moment.

  20. quicktime playblast error

    perhaps a solution to a bug.
    I have been getting the
    // Error: line 0: Unable to create video track. Check format.
    when trying to playblast quicktimes. I've been doing some looking and there is this:
