How can we improve Maya?

  1. Please Fix this UI Error

    i have a multi monitor setup, maya is set on monitor nr 3 by default, but every time i open a new file, the open file panel and many other panels don't save the last position so i have to always find it in my first monitor :

  2. Outliner v2.0

    I think it's time for improving the Outliner.

    Here is my ideas:

    - Show/Hide object/objects (like Hide/Unhide).
    - Lock objects (Like reference).
    - New layer from selected objects.
    - Favorite: so you can then show only favorited objects (like Ctrl+1 in view port).
    - Sort by: Type, Name, Last created etc.
    - Colors the object/groups/etc in the outliner
    - Move object up/down in list.

  3. Shape Editor should have a "New target from current values" (duplicate and merge)

    It would be helpful if the blendshape node had a new option "New Target from current" which evaluated the current total output for the blendshape and made a new target with those values.

    Why?

    When creating face morphs it is useful to create a set of base shapes and apply them in various amounts for the mouth shapes. In order to "bake" these shapes a set of duplicate and merge operations must be made with the dumber of duplicates matching the number of targets you use. This take a long time.

  4. Arnold Render View dockable

    Now that everything is dockable in Maya 2017, it is a shame that the new Arnold Render view is not docakble. Would make the UI perfect if it was!

  5. Straighten UV Brush Tool for UV Editor

    Hi,

    There's a GIF picture attached to this post that illustrates this suggestion better than a hundred of words.

    Maya feedback program already has a bunch of requests for new UV Editing tools in Maya, with one of them being a Straighten UV functionality, as can be seen in this topics:

  6. Time Slider Selection Handles

    It would make animating long scenes much easier being able to click in the general area of the circle to get the precise frame that you need to be on. There are hotkeys to move to the next/previous frame, but this would be so much nicer (that and I've replaced those valuable "<" and ">" hotkeys with my own custom ones)

  7. UI re-design at the top of the Attribute Editor

    There seems to be a lot of wasted space at the top of the attribute editor. I have mocked up a way to make better use of this space below:

  8. If Maya has a option of changing selected keys colors in time liner to get idea of animation blocking keys and polishing keys ...

    When we animate any object , we first do blocking and then detail animation . So if we have option of changing the selected keys color in time slider from red to some other selected colors it would be great. So that we can differentiate which keys ' I used for blocking stage and which are belongs to polishing stage . Its just my opinion . If you think my Idea is good for working in the software . please provide it in your next release versions.

  9. fix Camera Clip Plane problems

    camera clip plane often made bad view result, i know that can be set a large Near Clip Plane value to fix it (like 10 or 100), but it Is not a perfect solution. when i zoom in or zoom out, i need adjusting this value again.

    So I hope to have a new "view engine (maybe Viewport 2.1)" can fix it.

  10. Ignore UV flip for Unfold 3D & co

    Add an option to ignore flipped UV shells or rather keep their current orientation when unfolding UVs.
    Would help a lot with symmetrical object that have mirrored UVs and require adjusting their UVs after they have been added.

  11. Very Frustrated With Updates And Subscription Model

    I have been a Maya user since the very first version of Maya, I must say that I am impressed with the improvements that Maya has had over the last year and a half. But I am a bit concerned with the way Maya is updating and the way that it is growing.

    I primarily use Maya as a modeling tool. That being said, we are in a weird state in Maya right now where you have the normal Maya modeling tools and the modeling tool kit. And they don’t play nicely with each other…at all. (I can’t even predict…

    Thanks for taking the time to write up all of this, Nick. Your points are all valid and completely understood. I’m the designer who owns the area of modeling in Maya and I wanted to mention a few things in light of what you’ve shared.

    Starting in the Summer of 2012, we built an internal team to focus exclusively on improving Modeling & UV workflows in Maya. Our first development work was delivered in the Maya 2013 Extension release (Fall 2012), where we improved a couple of things in modeling like Poly Reduce. In the follow-up release, Maya 2014, we introduced the Modeling Toolkit (amongst other things), which was essentially a basic integration of the popular NEX plug-in. We knew that Maya’s modeling feature set needed a significant boost and felt that the Modeling Toolkit would do that for us. It did. However, as you’re saying, the experience feels like…

  12. UV unwrapping tool like 3D Coat, but without the curvy shapes it produces.

    In 3D Coat there is a really great UV unwrapping workflow. Basically you select which edges you want to be seams and as you add or remove an edge it shows you a real time preview of what the unwrap will subsequently look like. Once you are happy you hit apply. This method of unwrapping is the fastest easiest way to unwrap complex mechanical models or simple shapes.

    Unfortunately 3D Coat got the workflow right, but their unwrap algorithm is not great so you get curvy or wavy shells when you want perfect straight and uniform uv shells.

  13. Maya media player / Playblast Veiwer

    Being an animator, it has always been a daunting task to view playblast. It doesn't matter which studio I am at, or which player I am using... QuickTime, VLC, Windows MediaClassic... there is always something that is missing or flawed. QuickTime is great, but it's laggy and slow and buggy sometimes. FrameCycler has been one of the best so far. But now that Adobe owns the company, it's not available anywhere.

    I think it's time for a true playblast viewer for Maya. This "Maya Media Player" is light and simple. It combines the best of all worlds from players mentioned…

  14. Naiad in Maya: Now that I know autodesk owns Naiad . . .

    Naiad is great . . . maya's liquid simulations are aging.

    I would love to have those 2 together, as long as it's stable.

  17. It would be great to overhaul Paint FX

    PaintFX is one of those amazing things that people in other packages look at longingly, yet it has barely changed since version 5. More options, more supported renderers (natively) and a nice system for creating your own, especially things like making your own leaves, or various other parts. Geo instancing on complex paintFX trees would be a great thing for sure.

  18. Make shelf able to be a floating toolbar, and to optionally be veritically aligned

    It would be useful to be able to use the shelf similar to the Photoshop tool palette, which can be docked or free-floating. It would be great if the layout of this "tool palette"/buttons could be vertical.

  19. Create a node based Particle Editor like in 3ds Max's "View Particle" ability.

    Having a more improved particle editing system like in 3ds Max. The ability to add events and such in a node based editor such as the "View Particle" menu set in 3ds Max.
