How can we improve Maya?

  2. Easier object manipulation in orthographic views with scroll wheel

    Being able to scroll with a mouse while holding down the center point with the move tool and having the object move closer or farther from the orthographic camera direction would be very useful and mean less jumping back and forth from ortho and perspective views.

  3. shadow

    It would be nice to be able to disable shadows in the viewfinder so I can more easily tell if I accidentally made bad geometry or if that's a shadow effect. An alternative would be to have the ability to change the color of the bad geometry.... like, red or blue for example... make it a user setting.

  4. Let ShaderFx read and write the frame buffer

    This way we can not only design foward surface shaders, but also screen space effects and deferred shading. This is standard today and would be awesome to have this kind of freedom in shaderfx. This (with cascade shadow maps) could easily be used for some next level pre-viz.

  5. curves are too slow to handle in maya

    Lots of curves are almost impossible to handle in Maya.
    Right now we are working on a lots of birds and we choose to do the primary feathers with curves which get deformed in Softimage and brought back to Maya as Arnold standin.

    It was impossible to do deformations of ~300.000 curves in Maya and there is no way to have something like strands for particles since I assume Maya does not support the concept of having an array stored on a point (which would be necassary for strands).

    So I was hoping that it might be possible to improve…

  6. Perspective Match/Camera Match tool like Max

    Please add a Perspective Match tool like 3ds Max.

    Currently we are left to 'eyeball' the matching of backplates.

  7. Camera Improvements, height, tilt, overlay info, frustrum, metadata, etc

    Was working on previz for a real world project and found maya cameras to be really unfriendly.

    I suggest the following improvements:

    1. Camera tilt - angle to horizon, no matter what the rotate x,y,z are.
    2. Camera height - set whatever ground plane and get realtime height.
    3. Change lens and have the "Camera Aperture" update to keep the same framing.
    4. Change "Camera Aperture" and update the lens to keep the same framing.
    5. Link/Unlink the "camera aperture" to lens.
    6. Rename "camera aperture" to sensor size?

  8. Toggle to solo objects in layers to show in the Viewport

    By the life of me I don't know why this isn't already in Maya since the introduction of layers

  9. unlock and change the default grey lambert shader

    Since viewport 2.0 is the new standard for graphic cards it would be great to have some matcaps as standard materials. It´s really productive to model with usefull shaders that allow you to see curvature and decent fake reflections.
    Im not talking about the direct x shader which is very cool, but a matcap type like this:

    By the way I use modo and love this feature. But would really like to have this in maya.

  10. Camera movement like unreal engine 4 (Shift + move tool, Bring the camera along for the ride)

    Shift+move tool would be a really bug improvement on Maya and Maya LT. I don't enjoy moving an object around then having to move the camera around separately. adding Shift + move tool would allow the camera to come along for the ride.

    1) Fast camera switching panel (watch screenshot).
    2) The name for a new camera is - Camera1, not Persp1

  13. Improve VP 2.0 Transparency Sorting

    Viewport 2.0's transparency sorting, in some ways, is inferior to Maya's legacy viewport. This is due to the lack of a "Polygon Transparency Sorting" option.

    As a test, open a scene that contains a many layers of transparent objects which intersect at many points (something like a tree or cloud asset composed of many alpha cards). Toggle through the Viewport 2.0 transparency sorting modes:

    Simple - Transparent objects fail to stack in the right order.

    Object Sorting - Intersecting transparent objects will pop in front and behind each other.

    Weighted Average - All transparent objects blend together, disregarding depth order.

  14. image plane - frame cache improvements

    Better cache on Image Plane (saving cache to file, importing and an option to auto import cache for image plane) & make the image plane playing the cache backwards as well.

  15. "look at" or touch pointed viewport navigation

    Choosable navigation methods, like in MARI (with "look at" options, like in C4D and ZBrush), because it is dreadful now (wasting my time) and without scroll or meter limit, I mean without deceleration! This would be VERY IMPORTANT! Thanks!

  16. Adjustable grid size that toggles between user defined scales.

    Creating art assets for video games often requires creating assets on a grid, for the sake of consistency, game design and our sanity.

    We may flick between between multiple grid scales as we work many times during a day, which means currently we keep opening the grid options to apply a new level of subdivisions to our grid.

    If Autodesk can include a simple addition that enables the user to set multiple grid scales (ie: 16units, 32, 64) which we can toggle through, or perhaps a x2 of our current grid scale, that would be great.

  17. Parallel-Split Shadow Maps for viewport 2.0

    Allow for large scenes to get a acceptable ammount of shadow detail so it can be used for pre-viz and real-time applications

  18. Color Border Edges for Visibility

    It is incredibly frustrating to track down open/disconnected border edges on meshes when the vertices are in the same place. Softimage always colored border edges on selected objects cyan so they'd stand out from the rest of the wireframe.

    Something like this would be fantastic. The existing tool for showing border edges only thickens the wireframe, which is only marginally helpful and makes it easy to miss spots.

  19. Improved 3dsmax navigation and shortcut setup within Maya.

    Have precise navigation, rotation (holding alt), and possibly a variety of widely used shortcuts from 3ds max and implemented into Maya for 3ds max users to be efficient, have ease of access, and perform tasks in Maya as if navigating in 3ds max. I believe this is by far the biggest pending improvement that can allow for software flexibility for users with multiple software experiences.

  20. Maya camera toolkit

    Please add a toolkit for camera. The toolkit will contain 3 simple buttons.

    1. Undo Button
    2. Redo Button
    3. Lock/Unlock Button

    It might include other text box to change camera history store amount.

    The undo button is used to undo the camera movement. The undo camera function is registered when the camera zooms in or moves.
    This is also when when the mouse scroll wheel is scrolled(Zoomed in/out), or after the left mouse button is released while holding the Alt key.

    The Redo button will do the opposite but the way it function is similar to the Undo button.
