Small Annoying Things to fix in Maya forum

Welcome all Maya users! We have merged the Maya and Maya LT forums to make it easier to track and vote on items that apply to both packages. Please help us identify things that bother you when you’re working in Maya that we can easily fix.

To see the Small Annoying Things that we fixed in Maya, select “Completed” in the “Status” drop-down below. Then click “Hot Ideas” to return to ideas with recent activity or many votes. Describe both the steps to show the issue, and how you would prefer it. Enter each idea separately (we’ll remove items with multiple ideas) and assign a specific category. What is a little tweak or change we can make to Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Layered Texture. "Over" mode set by default for new layers.

    When creating new layers in the Layered Texture node, they have the blending mode set to None. This is annoying.
    Please set it to Over for new layers.

  2. Fix persistence bugs Toolbar/Dithered settings in Render View

    Also one of the oldest and best known bugs. There does not seem to be any relation whatsoever between the checkmarks in the menus of the Render View to what is actually shown. Total crap shoot.

  3. 3D Paint tool: paint textures on referenced objects

    Currently when you paint a new texture on a referenced object the image file could not be saved/accessed due to the object's name space colon : character not allowed in file names.
    Choosing the folder where the file is saved could be another good option.

  4. Auto-key shouldn't require a set key

    When I turn on auto-key, I shouldn't have to first create a key in order for it to start working (otherwise, it doesn't work). If no keys have been set before turning auto-key on, Maya should create a default key at frame 0 and another key at the current frame, with the new position, rotation, etc. values on the current key frame.

  5. I want selective import like in Motionbuilder

    Why can't Maya have selective import like motionbuilder? I want to be able to import a file and say just import geometery or just import cameras and lights

  7. Make the Euler filter accessable from the timeline.

    Getting to the Euler filter is kind of a pain in the butt the way that it is now.

    Using the Euler filter now means that you have to open your graph editor, select the keys you need to fix so that they show up in the graph editor, select the keys in the graph editor, go to the curves drop down menu and click Euler Filter.

    Wouldn't it be great if we could just select the curves on our rig that we have keys on, highlight the keys in the timeline and then right click on the timeline to…

  8. Preview option for Duplicate Special

    I should be able to preview in my scene what the results will be of the options I've set for Duplicate Special, so that I don't have to Apply and Undo.

  10. Create a stereo camera from the current camera

    Often you will have your mono perspective camera in just the right place and want to convert it to a stereo camera. This is currently impossible and requires building a new stereo camera and applying the same values.

  11. Fix the bad scaling on the spring IK

    The spring ik should be more integrated into maya and include the same ability to scale multiple joint as the rp solver. Right now when scaling the joints move away from the end effector.

  12. Remove missing plugins from scene

    I would like a way of clearing missing plugins from a scene. It would be good if maya could select assets in a scene dependent on the missing plugins so that they can be manually fixed (example: show all materials with missing plugins).

  14. I want to be able to control the number of particles displayed(globally, as a percentage) in viewport 2.0

    It would be great if the new viewport allowed me to globally set a percentage of the particles in my scene to draw - this would make it easier to preview and playback my simulations.

    So for example if I set the value to 10%, all my particle nodes would only draw 10% of the actual number of particles.

  15. I want a way to modify id of component

    After you extrude or subdivide, the components are not continuous. So it is hard to select them via id.

  19. I want more control over what caches write out

    I want to only writing out the data that needs to be written out.
    There needs to be the flexibility to be smart about what I need written out on a case by case bases, and also when it’s written out – ie. can we do most of it at render time.

  20. Want to run geometry cache on multiple cores

    Currently, the geometry caching process has to go through the frame range once for each character – why can’t this happen in parallel on multiple cores?
