Small Annoying Things to fix in Maya forum

Welcome all Maya users! We have merged the Maya and Maya LT forums to make it easier to track and vote on items that apply to both packages. Please help us identify things that bother you when you’re working in Maya that we can easily fix.

Suggest and vote for annoying little quirks or problems in Maya you want us to fix, and get others to vote for your ideas.

To see the Small Annoying Things that we fixed in Maya, select “Completed” in the “Status” drop-down below. Then click “Hot Ideas” to return to ideas with recent activity or many votes. Describe both the steps to show the issue, and how you would prefer it. Enter each idea separately (we’ll remove items with multiple ideas) and assign a specific category. For ideas that you feel are specific to Maya LT, log them in the Maya LT specific Small Annoying Things forum.

Read blogs from our resident Maya experts for updates on when ideas are released in shipping version of Maya. https://area.autodesk.com/blogs/page/1/211.

Put larger issues in the Ideas for Maya forum. We’ll move issues that are not small (even if they are annoying) to this forum — if so, you’ll get your votes back.

  1. Give us back the use of the CMND-key to navigate on Maya OSX.

In versions prior to 2015, Mac users could use the Command key (CMND) with any of the 3 mouse buttons to navigate (tumble, track and dolly) within a viewport. With the release of Maya 2015 you took that option away from us without so much as providing a preference setting for it.
In the place that can be considered to be the most prime location for a hotkey on a Mac keyboard, we now essentially have a key that is a dud. In fact, it's worse than that, as pressing CMND still allows for 'tumbles' and 'tracks', but no longer…

  2. Bring back the toolbar icon style from Maya 2015.

The new single-color toolbar icons in Maya 2016 are hard to distinguish from one another, and slow down the user's workflow.

  3. Copy and Paste between scenes without renaming nodes

Maya should have a more friendly copy and paste: Right now it renames the nodes when you copy and paste objects from scene to scene.

I like creating objects in a scene and then pasting them into my "layout" scene.

Maya should only rename if there are conflicting names.

  4. Maya doesn't load plugins.

Ok this has bothered me doe decades and I have sent so many requests! The fact that maya can't remember my default plugins that I have set to autoload is ridiculous. I will load up my project then scene and got to render and behold the Mental Ray plugin isn't loaded in, the FBX, OBj and Alembic plugins are left out and actually anything that maya doesn't have built in doesn't load. I have saved my preferences but every so often maya forgets to load my plugins. This is not only hampering to my workflow but annoying when I need…

Thanks to everyone who’s voted for this idea.

We’d like to request that in addition to voting for it, you also log these as bugs (there’s a link on the forum page to do so), since gettng more information from different people helps us (in @paxsonsa’s words) fix these annoying SOBs.

  5. Modeling Tool Kit in 2016 missing Critical Features from previous versions

Integration of the modeling toolkit / NEX tool in 2016 is missing some important functionality.

First, the slide functionality that was mapped to the Control + Shift MMB has been removed. This function was extremely important to an efficient modeling workflow. Surface constraint - Slide, and other workarounds are not good enough. Please add the Ctrl + Shift MMB back to the transform manipulators in component mode.

Secondly, Preselection Highlighting, which is now called Highlight Nearest Component does not make the component active this feature allowed for very fast mesh editing without having to select the component explicitly.

    Move along…

  6. Auto Name File Nodes

Why do I have to rename a file node after setting the fileTexurePath. It should automatically take the basename of the file path. Also anywhere where I'm making a new file node via the UI. It should prompt for a file path 1st. Currently it's a 2 step process.

As Amorano said, this could potentially break some systems.

So why do you need this?
How about show node name as well as texture name for file node?
So you can identify texture nodes in Hypershade or Node Editor.

  7. Kill the TURTLE

The TURTLE plugin is driving us crazy here at WETA Workshop. We want to turn it off but deselecting Auto Load doesn't work! It just keeps coming back, re-creating the Turtle shelf and populating our scenes with Turtle nodes that we have to unlock and delete all the time.

Please fix this VERY ANNOYING THING. We don't want Turtle, it's shelf, or it's nodes in our scenes!!!

  8. Student version popups!

Please limit the student version popups to one time per session.
It pops up every time I save, save-as, autosave, or even copy to clipboard (because it is actually saving the selection into the temporary file storage)
Having to click continue every time I want to copy-paste a selection is easily one of the most annoying things that I've dealt with in a piece of software.
    Thank you in advance.

  9. Don't prompt to save an empty scene

If I open Maya and then go to file:open, Maya prompts me to save the empty scene it created when it opened.
It also autosaves blank scenes if I leave it open for a while.

  10. Profile Sweep Tool

Maya needs a profile/sweep tool like in Max.

While it is possible to extrude along a path in Maya, it does not work on 90* edges or even wider angles.

I propose a tool in Maya, whether it is existing or new, to be able to select a path, a curve profile, or face, and make it conform exactly to the path on any angle.

It can be done and done well, a simple ruby script for SketchUp, ProfileBuilder, is a perfect example:

    smustard.com/script/ProfileBuilder

  11. Squash and stretch IK Handle

The main IK solver should have integrated Squash and Stretch in order to simplify rigging process. These features are standard in most cartoon rigs and to develop a simple stretchy leg/arm we have to create a bunch of connections and nodes.

Check Cinema 4D IK system, they have these features integrated as i describe.

  13. Keep code in the lower half of the Script Editor when it's executed, instead of flushing it

Unless I highlight code in the lower half of the Script Editor, it gets flushed away when I execute it.

As I develop a script it's common to execute the script several times to review modifications, but having to highlight everything just to prevent it from flushing is a pain.

Highlighting some parts of the script is a great way to achieve "selective" execution, so don't change this.

But if nothing is highlighted, execute everything and leave the code where it is.

Select lines of code and excute them (by ctrl+main enter or num enter)

Seletd lines are excuted and all lines remain in the lower half side.

As one user mentioned, the solution is not enough. Reopen it for further discussion.
How about adding an option or shortcut for this?

  14. Insert Edge Loop World Unit Offset

Currently there is no option for a world fixed offset amount in the tool settings for "Insert Edge Loop" tool. However the polySplitRing command can accept offset values, but only a weighted value.

I would like for there to be an option for absolute offset distance in "Equal Distance From Edge" Mode.

This would be useful when adding control loops to a certain model and being able to remain consistent, without simply eyeballing.

  15. Maya 2017 Workspace: Docked editors don't keep their size when re-opened

When I reduce an editor (like Channelbox) and than reopen it, its size is different from before.

  16. Add a search box at the top of each column of the connection editor.

The connection editor lists too many attributes and sometime it can take a whille to find what you're looking for especially when not set to alphabetical order. Add a search box to quickly filter attributes.

  17. My studio is going back to maya 2016 - massive viewport and QT problems impeding work

Too many problems to describe. We have a room full of advanced Maya users each with 10-20 years of maya experience, and we are fed up with maya 2017. Its a product with great new features but its so broken on the interface and display / prefs side that it makes daily work really unenjoyable and inefficient.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I’m setting this entry to “Under Review” for a number of reasons:
    - The subject line and vote count of this entry warrants direct and immediate attention – and I assure you, you’ve got it
    - We’ve put a lot of resources on bug fixing lately and hopefully you’ll notice the improvements in upcoming major and minor (“Update”) releases
    - A number of items brought up here are right now being worked on (e.g. Mr. Noo’s complaint about components moving locally at different speeds for objects with different scales and Gerard’s complaint that you can’t snap to a local rotation axis)
    - We’re listening…

On that last point, we are looking everywhere for feedback on Maya’s latest releases and how we can improve its stability and robustness. Mr. Noo, you’re absolutely right – loads of features alone isn’t what encourages users to move to…

  18. Add a powerful renamer tool with useful options like prefix, suffix, etc.

This is such an important tool for scene organization. Everybody uses these, but Maya should come with a powerful one right out of the box.

  19. Bezier curves in Ramps

On Ramp Attributes in addition to:
    Linear
    Smooth
    Spline
    None

    Please add:
    Bezier

It's really boring having to simulate beziers with lots of points...

  20. PTex support for MR needs work

NVidia posted a fix that's supposed to fix MR crashing with displacements, but you still can't plug a PTEX look-up node into a bump node last I looked. The absolute path in the PTEX look-up node is bad too - couldn't MR just read a normal file node with PTEX?
