Welcome all Maya users! We have merged the Maya and Maya LT forums to make it easier to track and vote on items that apply to both packages. Please help us identify things that bother you when you’re working in Maya that we can easily fix.

What is a little tweak or change we can make to Maya?

  1. My studio is going back to maya 2016 - massive viewport and QT problems impeding work

    Too many problems to describe. We have a room full of advanced Maya users each with 10-20 years of maya experience, and we are fed up with maya 2017. Its a product with great new features but its so broken on the interface and display / prefs side that it makes daily work really unenjoyable and inefficient.

    Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I’m setting this entry to “Under Review” for a number of reasons:
    - The subject line and vote count of this entry warrants direct and immediate attention – and I assure you, you’ve got it
    - We’ve put a lot of resources on bug fixing lately and hopefully you’ll notice the improvements in upcoming major and minor (“Update”) releases
    - A number of items brought up here are right now being worked on (e.g. Mr. Noo’s complaint about components moving locally at different speeds for objects with different scales and Gerard’s complaint that you can’t snap to a local rotation axis)
    - We’re listening…

    On that last point, we are looking everywhere for feedback on Maya’s latest releases and how we can improve its stability and robustness. Mr. Noo, you’re absolutely right – loads of features alone isn’t what encourages users to move to…

  2. RMB marking menu freezes Maya 2017

    Trying to switch to components via RMB marking menu freezes Maya randomly or once in a while . This never happened before in the other versions of Maya. I have updated to latest Nvidia driver and still the same problem. This is a major blocking . Please address this very annoying Viewport 2/ RMB marking menu bug.Thanks.

    UPDATE 1***
    Thanks to help from one of the voters, DavidDeacon, the culprit has been identified: Navigate Graph in Bonus Tools 2017. This is a bonus tool that activates itself by default on installing the set of bonus tools, and by removing it, this particular memory leak issue disappears. So the good news is that you can still use Bonus Tools 2017 – you should just disable “Navigate Graph” (buildTraversalMM) watch this video to find out how to do so: .https://youtu.be/z71NeX03lOY?t=294

    We’re continuing to investigate this on our end, but I thought I’d share David’s discovery with the rest of you.

    We’re seeing reports of this, but we still haven’t been able to reproduce the issue on our end. And so without being able to reproduce the issue, we can’t identify what’s wrong and more…

  5. Blendshape edit crash on multiple undo.

    maya 2017 (linux) possibly windows too..
    I can't log this via the report a problem feature due to our firewall so consider this a big annoying problem..

    when I'm sculpting a blendshape for PSD's or otherwise, and I undo past the point of clicking the edit button (ie I pressed the edit button to sculpt the shape a bit more, then made some brush strokes, smoothing etc, and I have undone back to before the point of selecting the edit button) maya chokes for a while then dies..

  6. Maya shouldn't pull window focus while loading

    Loading Maya it will repeatedly pull window focus and interrupts you. This is even worse if you are loading a heavy scene or directly opening a file.

    Maya will force focus away from whatever else you are doing. Blinking on the taskbar when ready would be much more reasonable.

  7. Make it easier to reset a camera's image resolution:image size parameter no longer exists in attributes.

    make it possible to quickly access and change camera image size: maya 2017 no longer offers image size setting within camera attributes. Reference in render window to "camera panel" makes no sense.

  8. Remember Caddies last settings

    Every time modelling, the caddies dont remember the last settings, so for example, I'm doing bridge and I every time I have to reduce the number of edges to 1.
    I can use the shortcut G but I dont just do the same operation over and over, I would like them to remember last settings, and also have a reset settings buttons

  9. Update playblast options to remember path and output name

    This seems like a no-brainer but has been how Maya has behaved forever. Please update the playblast output options to give the option for an output folder -- which Maya REMEMBERS -- and fix the browse option so that when you browse to a custom output folder it does not demand that you give an output file name, which has the effect of clearing whatever file name is already in the playblast options. I'd like to see playblast options updated in general, since with the improvements in hardware display in recent years I often find myself using playblasts for certain…

  10. Cannot select all keys in Dope Sheet scene summary

    For most animation curves you can easily select and manipulate all using the scene summary in the dope sheet editor. However, certain nodes, like a parentConstraint can have keys displayed in the scene summary, but it's unclear what keys it is and you cannot select them.

    Notice in the video how after moving some keys, the keys seems to be left behind and cannot be selected or changed.

  11. Fix playblast timeline feedback

    The timeline time marker frequently doesn't update properly when playblasting scenes. This makes it impossible to see the progress of the playblast and/or tell if Maya has frozen. When playblasting dozens of times a day (a regular occurence), this is a huge problem.

  12. Fix Human IK so that generated controller objects are properly zeroed out.

    Currently the Human IK tool generates controller objects that do not have zero values. This is a huge no-no from an animation perspective, and really, really undermines the otherwise great value of this tool. Please fix so that controllers are zeroed out.

  13. XSI-like easy to tear off channel box for exposing channels for multiple objects

    in XSI it used to be that I could select an object, press alt enter, and get access to that objects transforms in a floating window,
    then I could do that for other object and copy paste from one torn off channel (or attribute) window to another. I can't figure out how to do it in maya, I've had to use a notepad, which i had to copy and paste from

  14. inline math in numeric fields

    in XSI in any numeric field I could put "35+6" and when I hit enter, it would resolve to 41

    in maya you have to select a field that had 35 and press "+=6" that is extremely unintuitive, and doesn't work for all fields

    say I'm animating and I want to go forward 24 frames, I should be able to just put "+24" to the current number in the current frame box and it should resolve correctly

  15. fix graph editor on 4k monitors

    the graph editor region tool does not work properly on a 4k monitor. it works fine on 1080p monitors

    I cannot select a number of curve points, reigion select a box of points, and then scale easily, it takes a few tries before I can select a proper handle

  16. animation playback for specific window

    in XSI you could select which window to playback (or all windows) the animation when you scrubbed the timeline or graph editor timeline or press the play button

    I'd like to lock a specific window to only playback that one window so maya is faster. even if i tear off a window, I'd like to lock that specific window to animate only that one, or all windows.

    right now it's "which window is currently selected" but it doesn't even do that..

  17. solo objects render solo

    in XSI I could solo objects and render that window with only the selected objects. in maya if I solo objects (isolate select) it still renders the whole scene. I can work faster if I send fewer objects to the renderer.

    my render engine is redshift.

  18. allow multiple navigational keys (alternate alt key)

    in XSI the nav key was "s" which made sense because all the other manipulation keys were around it.

    in houdini, it's spacebar which makes even more sense, because nav is the most used tool in a 3D program, and spacebar is the most accessible button on a keyboard

    in maya the nav key is alt, which makes me force my hand into non-natural poses for long periods of time. I just want to be able to bind another keyboard button to do exactly what alt does in the hotkey menu so I don't get arthritis or carpal tunnel or…

  19. XSI-like graph editor keys with weighted handles that are free length

    I want a new curve type that was similar to XSI or even After effects curves, where the curve handles are connected by default, but have free tangent lengths. I have to keep locking and unlocking keys which takes more time than needed

  20. XSI-like graph editor point drawing

    in XSI there was the ability to draw points on a curve by just clicking while holding down "i"

    not like the way it is now, where you insert a new key in maya, but you could actually just draw points randomly, I used it to add variance in my animation curves, like noise to make it less mechanical. it was a fast way to add things.
