How can we improve Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. sort Edge to Circle

    Would be great to have a tool that distributes the selected edges into circular form.

    You'll find a picture and a custom script doing this in the attachment.

  2. consolidate node editors

    have a single node editor instead of having a hypergraph, hypershade and a node editor and oh yeah.. a node connections editor

  4. Maya media player / Playblast Veiwer

    Being an animator, it has always been a daunting task to view playblast. It doesn't matter which studio I am at, or which player I am using... QuickTime, VLC, Windows MediaClassic... there is always something that is missing or flawed. QuickTime is great, but it's laggy and slow and buggy sometimes. FrameCycler has been one of the best so far. But now that Adobe owns the company, it's not available anywhere.

    I think it's time for a true playblast viewer for Maya. This "Maya Media Player" is light and simple. It combines the best of all worlds from players mentioned…

  5. Need a system where animators can put down place markers to indicate events.

    All animation editors (Timeline, Graph Editor, Trax etc...) need a system allowing animators to place markers to indicate events in time, like you have in Adobe Premiere for instance. You place a marker and include a description, you can also quickly jump between markers etc.

  6. Create a node based Particle Editor like in 3ds Max's "View Particle" ability.

    Having a more improved particle editing system like in 3ds Max. The ability to add events and such in a node based editor such as the "View Particle" menu set in 3ds Max.

  7. Render View overhaul

    The Render View could be made to be much more useful. A proper render history view with thumbnails that keeps every current render for that scene, it is simple to clear them all later, and annoying to have to press keep image every time. There are many other features that could be added. Cinema 4D has done a very could job with their current image viewer so that is a good place to start. I would love to have a feature set similar to that render view.

  8. circle edge loop

    Circle edge loop tool. In Blender you can select an edge loop and convert it to a perfect circle. This makes joining objects like cylinders to cubes much simpler.

  9. Unify Animation Layers, Trax Editor, and Importing/Exporting Animation.

    The Trax Editor is limiting because of the need to create character sets, and the need to switch modes between editing clips and editing keys. Animation layers are great because they work on anything, but are limited because they only affect values and can't affect timing. There's also no universal and reliable way to import and export animation.
    Animation layers should be editable in a more non-linear way, and their timing should driven by an animation curve that can be edited. Retimed keys should be interactively re-adjusted in the graph editor. Any sort of non-linear editing should still leave keyframes…

  12. Use thumbnails embedded in the maya file for browsing

    Max and Mudbox, have this feature.

    It is very time consuming when you have a big project and you have to find a specific geometry or prototype for your level.

    This would make it so much easier to browse through my collection assets to find something to reuse.

  14. Ignore UV flip for Unfold 3D & co

    Add an option to ignore flipped UV shells or rather keep their current orientation when unfolding UVs.
    Would help a lot with symmetrical object that have mirrored UVs and require adjusting their UVs after they have been added.

  16. Multi-Cut SNAP to grid

    This feature would make getting precise angle cuts through objects exponentially easier.
    Seems simple and small :)

    PS. If this works in Mama Maya then sorry but I'm posting it here since more people check in than in Baby Maya section :)

  17. Face assignment breaking renderlayers

    Faceassignment of shaders breaks renderlayers, please fix this if at all possible.

    I never ever use face assignment for this reason, however some of mayas modelling tools create face assignments, which can cause problems if one isn't carefully cleaning every model before moving on to shading/rendering or even modifying a shaded model.

    The following tools create face assignments (there may be more):

    - Poly bevel
    - Combine (even if the objects have the same material assigned)
    - Boolean (even if the objects have the same material assigned)

    Maybe adding an option in preferences to turn of face assignment when modelling…

  18. Time Slider Selection Handles

    It would make animating long scenes much easier being able to click in the general area of the circle to get the precise frame that you need to be on. There are hotkeys to move to the next/previous frame, but this would be so much nicer (that and I've replaced those valuable "<" and ">" hotkeys with my own custom ones)

  19. UV unwrapping tool like 3D Coat, but without the curvy shapes it produces.

    In 3D Coat there is a really great UV unwrapping workflow. Basically you select which edges you want to be seams and as you add or remove an edge it shows you a real time preview of what the unwrap will subsequently look like. Once you are happy you hit apply. This method of unwrapping is the fastest easiest way to unwrap complex mechanical models or simple shapes.

    Unfortunately 3D Coat got the workflow right, but their unwrap algorithm is not great so you get curvy or wavy shells when you want perfect straight and uniform uv shells.
