How can we improve Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Cut/Copy/Paste components inside same object and between objects.

    Right now Duplicate tool only duplicate faces to an entirely separate object, it's a long shot from a free modeling approach.
    There must be the ability to cut or copy faces, edges, or vertices while still inside a given object, or select another one and paste therein.
    What's so difficult here?

  2. please disable hot keys for workspace switching or fix lock button

    Workspace will occasionally switch (I believe depending where you cursor is, I cannot pinpoint) to sculpting mode or animation mode when you hit S or A. Very annoying and destroys work productivity.

    This is not definable in the hotkeys table.
    The lock button does not work.

  3. Duplicate a shelf button

    Please make a choice to be able to duplicate a shelf button with all the "Popup Menu Items" and "Double Click Command".

  4. sort Edge to Circle

    Would be great to have a tool that distributes the selected edges into circular form.

    You'll find a picture and a custom script doing this in the attachment.

  5. Hypershade - Faster Node Creation

    The main problem with the Hypershade is that many of the things are very repedetive. Here are some suggestions to make it much faster to work with.

    Tab Node creation:
    For example for creating a file node I would expect the behavior like this:

    press[TAB]--> Type "fil"--> press[Enter] --> file node created

    Right now the user has to push downArrow 3 times and couciously select a projection type, wich is very unintuitive. Better to put the mostly used type as autofill and leave the other two in the dropdown box below for manual selection.

  7. Look at surface under mouse pointer

    For various workflows it would be very helpful to have a hotkey that makes the camera look at the surface under the mouse pointer.

    Example: I'm selecting faces on a polygon and need the camera to orbit around a specific small region to access some hidden components.

    I made me a workaround to look at the component that has a pre-selection highlight (=is under the mouse pointer).

    It works ok, but I'd like to have a more general possibility to query the surface point under the mouse.

  8. Slice for tube and cylinder & No cap

    There should be an option to slice a cylinder or tube from: to: and a tick box to get rid of the caps like in C4D. The advantage of this is while the cylinder or tube maintain its properties to change height and radius it also slice to make portions of the tube and cylinder instead of deleting faces.

  9. Add the ability to change the quad draw wireframe thickness.

    as title suggests. Current default is to thick for my liking. See topogun, much thinner line weight. Would be nice to have the ability to customize this thickness to user's liking.

  10. curves are too slow to handle in maya

    Lots of curves are almost impossible to handle in Maya.
    Right now we are working on a lots of birds and we choose to do the primary feathers with curves which get deformed in Softimage and brought back to Maya as Arnold standin.

    It was impossible to do deformations of ~300.000 curves in Maya and there is no way to have something like strands for particles since I assume Maya does not support the concept of having an array stored on a point (which would be necassary for strands).

    So I was hoping that it might be possible to improve…

    Possibility to paint constraint weights for component to surface constraints when it comes to nhair.

    Instead of only having a global width value for hair collisions it would be useful to have it on a override base per follicle.

  13. Quad Draw with make faces option like in Topogun

    In order for retopology to be faster we need Quad Draw to have a feature/option that creates faces on the fly like in Topogun. In Topogun is called "make faces". Quad Draw now it has something similar to Bridge tool in Topogun which from my experience is slower than building faces on the fly. Building first vertices and then filling them with faces by pressing shift is pretty much 2 steps instead of one , the way it would be if "make faces" option would exist in Quad Draw. Also many times Quad Draw doesn't know what vertices i want…

  14. Let "TAB" key to be assigned as hotkey

    TAB key is one of the most accessible for left hand. For whatever reason it cannot be remapped. It would be really cool to get ability to assign functionality to TAB.

  15. Upgrade Maya Python to 3.x

    When will Maya be upgraded to Python 3.x?

    Legacy Python 2.7 is starting to cause us issues in our pipeline. PySide2 is the most recent headache but many other distributions are also an issue. Additionally I would also petition Autodesk to compile Maya Python using the same MSC as the standalone Python distribution. This also causes many a headache by preventing version dependent Python modules from being used in Maya without having to recompile them.

  16. Attribute Editor - clearer, smarter UI

    Please overhaul Attribute Editor in similiar way as the new Hypershade.
    Good example: In the new Node graph of the Hypershade I can choose between
    - show me all available attributes
    - show me just connected attributes
    - show me only the most common used attributes
    This is something which the Attribute Editor is still missing.
    AND there are two more important things, that should be easy to see at a glance:
    - Where have been default values changed (display tab colored?)
    - Where are MEL expressions hidden? (and maybe I can get them displayed just by hoovering with the…

  17. polygon extrude with curves

    It's really hard to do a simple extrusion in a polygon following a curve. Plz make it like 3ds Max!

  18. Micromesh (Zbrush) for Maya

    It would be awesome to have a streamlined / automated way to quickly generate seamless geometry patterns that can be deformed and distributed on parent mesh

  19. History List (Undo List)

    It would be very useful to have a list of all the history steps (Undo's) so you can see visually what was your steps until now besides you can include camera history to the list as well.

  20. Improve Attribute Editor XML Template

    As far as I can understand - currently if you want to set default view for node in attribute editor you have to do it with MEL in AE<nodeTypeName>Template.mel file and if you want to add another view you can do it with XML file. Why not consolidate everything to only XML file? Add option to write <view name='Default'> or something like that to overwrite default node view in attribute editor. If mel file is not detected, then use information from XML one.
