How can we improve Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  1. working with real world units

working with real world units is still a pain in maya, if you want to do things real scale something like a big architectural scene maya got issues with the clipping planes, even if you make them larger on the camera settings still the manipulators get messed up, it becomes really uncomfortable to work with, all the tools should use real world units as well, for example if you do a bevel you should specify the width of the bevel in cm or whatever units you are working with, same with displacement heigths, 3dsmax does this and is really usefull…

  3. Run rendering and the UI on separate threads

Render and UI need to run on separate threads – why does the UI lock up while the renderer is running?

Thanks to everyone who’s voted on this issue. It is being moved to the Ideas for Maya forum, because although it’s annoying you, it’s not a small thing to address.

  4. Render View overhaul

The Render View could be made to be much more useful. A proper render history view with thumbnails that keeps every current render for that scene, it is simple to clear them all later, and annoying to have to press keep image every time. There are many other features that could be added. Cinema 4D has done a very could job with their current image viewer so that is a good place to start. I would love to have a feature set similar to that render view.

Also something that is just more responsive overall while rendering. Being able to…

To all the people who are entering great comments: If you feel strongly about an idea you mentioned, please enter it as a separate idea in the forum. Getting a more specific understanding of concrete ideas we can address is more helpful than general ideas.

  5. Add a progress bar and ESC for every operation that take longer than few minutes

Any operation that takes longer than few minutes should give you a progress bar, and always an option to interrupt it at any time.
We currently have no way to determine if certain operations could take minutes, hours or even days.

    Thanks for your feedback.
Could you give us a list?
So we can fix them one by one.
Also this item will be divided. So prioritize the list, please.

  6. Make Component Editor like Microsoft Excel

I want to be able to
    - color texts and cells
    - sort rows
    - cut/copy/paste values
    - access to RMB menus
    to name a few.

  8. Folders in Layers

Folders in Layers allows better organization than the Outliner (and a completely different paradidgm). it would be good for collapsing groups , templating and turning visibility of entire groups of objects in one click.

I know you can do that in outliner, but this offers anothe way to group objects, that the outliner won't allow since that is a hierachical tool for riggers to parent, constrain objects. Maya arranges those logical groupings, as well as the rigger.

  9. Outliner v2.0

I think it's time for improving the Outliner.

    Here is my ideas:

    - Show/Hide object/objects (like Hide/Unhide).
    - Lock objects (Like reference).
    - New layer from selected objects.
    - Favorite: so you can then show only favorited objects (like Ctrl+1 in view port).
    - Sort by: Type, Name, Last created etc.
    - Colors the object/groups/etc in the outliner
    - Move object up/down in list.

    Check the attached picture please.

  11. Allow Attribute Editor changes for multi-object selection.

The Attribute Editor allows for only one object at a time to be edited. The way to change one attribute for numerous objects is either with the Channel Box or an Attribute Spread Sheet. But neither of them holds all the attributes that you can find/modify in the Attribute Editor. Yes, there are ways to go around, including scripting, but the Attribute Editor is much simpler and efficient. The reason why the Attribute Editor didn't understand multi-object selections as early as Maya 1.0 completely escapes me.

  12. Fix Windowing on Mac OS X

Windowing on Mac OS X is a total mess since Maya 2010. In certain conditions the Hide command will be completely ignored. Additionally floating palettes like undocked Tool Settings don't honor application z-ordering. If for example Safari is the current top app, any Maya palettes will remain in front of it.

  15. Right-click to cancel

Just like in 3ds Max, when performing an operation in the viewport (i.e. Left Mouse Button click-dragging to create geometry; or click-dragging to move components like vertices on a mesh), add the ability to cancel the current operation by right-clicking the mouse. By clicking the RMB, anything you're currently doing in the viewport would get canceled, allowing for better trial and error workflows (and less reliance on Undo thereafter).

    Anonymous responded

what do you propose happens with the existing RMB marking menu?

  16. make the dependency graph multithreaded

Maya is still just too slow. Softimage ICE is fully multithreaded. Please, invest in a dependency graph which is also multithreaded.

  17. Make new versions of Maya ergonomic including mouse input options

Speaking as someone with a passion for 3d animation whose career has been put on hold after tens of thousands of dollars in education, software cost, and years of training due to documented hand damage after using older versions of Maya, can you please in future versions make the software more ergonomic?

There are programs out there that give the user many options as to how input devices such as mice or tablets operate. Can you at least give the user the OPTION to have modifiable mouse input?

Im mainly speaking about the requirement of click dragging on all three…

  18. Implement "grouping" in the Node Editor (like in Houdini, Softimage ICE, Fabric Engine Subgraphs)

Basically, we need a functionnlity similar to:
    - Houdini "Digital Assets"
    - Softimage ICE "Compounds"
    - Fabric Engine "SubGraphs"

    We should be able to:
    - Group nodes by consolidating their inputs and outputs into one (implode)
    - Ungroup node (explode)
    - Register a group for future reuse (should be versionnable)
    - Change the used version for a registered group instance
    - Export/Import a registered group

This would greatly enhance the rigging/fx workflow and allow people to share their work on the internets.

  19. Ubuntu Linux Support Installer Package

I know Maya is linux compatible but it's a crappy debian-based distro that is difficult to install and keep stable. I would like a proper installer package to download and install on Ubuntu 14 or older. Ubuntu is starting to become more popular and I really enjoy playing with Ubuntu Linux.

  20. Make a proper installer for Debian-based distrib

I know Maya has been only officialy supported for Redhat and now Fedora since the beginning. But please ! Listen to us Debian/Ubuntu users who have to deal with alien and all sort of tricks to install Maya on such distros.

Please, see the Linux Nuke installer which runs everywhere without any problems, even if it is only supported on Fedora as well...

    Thanks

@sebd_856: I’ve removed your note “A simpler licensing setup (float and node locked) on Linux would be awesome too.” from this idea, because you can’t submit multiple ideas. (This is so it’s clear what people are voting for.) If you feel that a simpler Linux licensing setup is one of your top 20 votes, please submit that separately.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
